Best Alcohol Drink Choices

While you may be sticking to a strict and healthy diet on most days, certain occasions call for relaxation and for many that might include an alcoholic drink in hand. When it comes to selecting the drink of your choice, keep in mind that all drinks are not created equal and those calories count and make a difference especially when you’re partaking in weight loss or management. Cat Kom and Bethany are here to outline your party guide, equipping you with the knowledge needed to make wise and responsible drinking choices!

Tip #1 : Alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to save calories. Drink a tall glass of water or sparkling water before and after drinking each and every alcoholic.  Meaning if you have 2 drinks, you’d take down a glass of water before, between and after that alcohol in order to keep you within moderation guidelines and to maintain hydration.  Plus I promise you you’ll be much more likely to feel better and keep functioning the next day.  And you’ll also be more likely to say no to those sea salt chips you keep eyeing.

Tip #2 : The fancier the drink, the higher the calories. Mojitos, margaritas and cosmos surpass 300 on the calorie scale so it’s best to keep your drinks simple at happy hour. Lighter colored drinks are known to be fewer calories so stick to vodka, light beer, minimal cocktails and wine that are naturally lower in calories.

Tip #3 : Skip the mixer altogether or ask if there are any low calorie options. Mixed drinks are typically higher in calories and is the biggest peril to drinking. A White Russian surpasses 400 calories because of the additives and a Long Island costs your body 700 calories because of the sweetened additives and syrups that could easily be avoided. One way to combat this problem is ordering a straight shot or an infused drink that contains real ingredients instead of toxic sweeteners.  And today it’s also awesome because the world is getting more health conscious, which means more places have low calorie mixer options.  Ask for agave instead of triple sec, for example.  Agave is an awesome low calorie alternative that tastes SO yummy.  You can also just ask for a “skinny” version of your favorite drink.  Trust me, they’ll know what that means.  If they don’t, go somewhere else next time.

Tip #4 : Dilute your drink. Adding water (sparkling or still) to your drink lessens the caloric content in each portion. It is also the perfect transition for those who prefer sugary and mixed drinks over simple drinks.

Tip #5 : Have a game plan and eat right. Responsible drinking means never having to say sorry for the times you drank and waking up the next day remembering the night in sheer clarity. Know your limits and set your limits. If you don’t know what your body likes, is sensitive to or how much you can drink, test your limits at home or in a safe environment. It is particularly beneficial to eat high proteins while drinking to help slow the absorption of alcohol and don’t forget to sip your drink to savor the pleasures attributed to drinking!

With this survivor’s guide, you’re ready to take on the night with self love and preparation so you don’t wake up regretting last night’s decisions. Cheers!
